Command & Conquer Red Alert 3 Commander’s Challenge Review

This game is the next chapter in the evergreen Command & Conquer franchise. Except this time its an XBOX Live arcade title and a huge one at that using up over two whole gigs of HD space!

Now I know some of you are still desperately clinging onto the idea that bigger isn't always better, but when it comes to this gem it certainly is as it packs a big bang for your buck!

This baby contains over thirty hours of classic RTS gaming goodness, mmmm nice!
It consists of 50 challenges, letting players use their skill and guile to battle through and achieve victory anyway they can.

Now I have always been a fan of the series since way back when and it is always one of the first games I load up onto any new PC or laptop I own, So now getting to play on my 360 did make me nervous how they would handle the control system. I need not of been concerned because they have totally nailed it and soon enough you are down with the kids and flying round the map in super quick time building, killing and defending your little ass off!

There are three factions to choose from this time around- The Soviets, The Allies, and The Empire of the Rising Sun. Each has its own unique weapons and troops and each has its own commanders that assist you and offer totally bonkers, cheesy and over the top advice! Very amusing little cut scenes from none other than wrestling legend Ric Flair and some British lads mag bird with big assets who keeps winking at me every time I succeed in a challenge.

Is there anyone left that doesn't know how an RTS works by now??.....what's that? One hand up at the back there, OK just for you let me briefly explain.

You start by placing your base on the map then by building power stations and setting up mining structures to harvest the goodies that you can turn into cash. Now this is where you will need to use all your resource management savvy and try and make the right choices to balance out your attacking and defensive capabilities. I always go for the all out gung ho, steam in there with the biggest kick ass army I can muster in the shortest amount of time possible approach. Sometimes catching the ruskies with their pants down and ripping them to shreds and other times getting blitzed by huge defensive turrets and never even getting into the base!

There are a myriad of different play styles you can try and that is the genius of this game.
There is also a very long tutorial that you can play through that has you chomping at the bit to start the game for real, but hang in there and complete it otherwise you will get your ass handed to you. Oh and you get a lovely little cheevy for doing it too *-)

I won't beat around the bush here, this game is challenging and quite hard at some points, but once you work out a good plan you should be OK. There are no save points during a mission, so it can be try try and try again, but if you love your C&C goodness like I do its fine and adds to the challenge.

Overall this is a must buy game for any RTS fan, the fact that it is such a huge game and for just 800 Microsoft points you really can't go wrong.

I am giving this game a heroic 8 out of 10, I did take a point off as I really hate fake wrestling, but then added one back as I like busty babes *-)

Great review. Am so determined to play this I just seem to never touch my downloaded arcade games. Still feel like I should be playing C&C games on my pc only.

Nice review mate, I'm a bit disappointed the aforementioned busty babe didn't appear in the video though. Razz

Nice Review, I'm a big C&C fan of old, can you play this online (against other people?) or is it just single player missions.

How does the control system rate to Halo Wars (if you've played it)...

Thanks

G
